How To Do Riviera Chic (Wherever You Are!)
All eyes are on Cannes right now as the festival falls into full swing, but me, my eyes are always on Cannes – and they wander over to Nice, St Tropez and beyond. You see I love Paris but I prefer sun – which is why I think I might prefer a life down in the south of France.
While that might not be feasible for me right now, a lot of the qualities of the Riviera I am happy to have adopted as mine own – and of course, naturally that trickles right into my personal style. I prefer laid back – easy going clothes. Summer is my favourite season and the beach is my favourite place to be, and so it seemed appropriate to wax lyrical on south-of-France chic, why I love it and some easy tips on how to style your own Riviera inspired ensembles this season.
The Riviera revolves around 2 key factors and while these aren't fashion related, you should use them as your styling base. They are sun and shore – and these two summer lovely qualities of the French coast mean your clothes should be effortless and easy. Key staples would include Breton stripes, oversized sun hats, light white cotton dresses – sandals and espadrilles during the day – heels only in the evening, should they be dinner appropriate.
What I especially love about the Riviera is it's retro spirit – when I think of the French coastline, Bardot, Birkin, Chanel – all these iconic women come to mind. So using these ladies as reference would be a good starting point. Riviera chic revolves around the beach – so layer bikinis under your dresses, keep makeup to a minimal – these small towns that line the shores are no place for elaborate ensembles. Simplicity is absolutely essential. But without further ado, here are some looks I styled alongside some styling tips of my own.
